Installing a new clutch in a Holden Colorado RG 2.8 single mass flywheel conversion
Date Posted:7 September 2026
Good day, guys! Dan from The Clutch Hub. Today we're going to be fitting a Blusteele Heavy-Duty Single-Mass Flywheel (SMF) conversion clutch kit to our own Holden RG Colorado—a test vehicle we plan to push to the absolute limit.
Vehicle Specs:
-
Model: Holden Colorado RG Series
-
Engine: 2.8L Duramax Turbo-Diesel
-
Factory Setup: Fitted from the factory with a fragile Dual-Mass Flywheel (DMF).
-
Goal: Convert from DMF to a far more durable SMF setup built to handle increased engine output, heavy towing, and off-road driving.
What’s Included in the Conversion Kit (Part Number: BGM9149)
-
Billet Steel Flywheel: Precision one-piece billet steel solid flywheel complete with a pre-installed starter ring gear and pre-fitted spigot bearing. Features integrated radial grooves designed to dissipate heat, prevent hot-spotting, and keep clutch operating temperatures low when feathering the clutch off-road or under heavy towing loads.
-
Heavy-Duty Clutch Disc: High-friction organic disc featuring an upgraded multi-spring torsional damper hub engineered to absorb engine harmonics and minimize gearbox rollover rattle.
-
Nodular Cast Iron Pressure Plate: High-performance cover assembly constructed with nodular cast iron on the friction surface (three times stronger than standard cast iron). Offers significantly higher clamp load for stronger bite under load.
-
Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC): Includes an OEM-quality internal hydraulic slave cylinder/release bearing unit.
-
Hardware & Accessories: Includes new flywheel bolts, pressure plate bolts, alignment dowels, a clutch alignment tool, technical instruction sheets, and a Blusteele air freshener/bedding-in mirror hanger.
Dual-Mass vs. Single-Mass Flywheel Comparison
Chris: While the transmission is down, let's compare the factory dual-mass flywheel we removed against the new Blusteele billet solid flywheel:
| Feature | Factory Dual-Mass Flywheel (DMF) | Blusteele Single-Mass Conversion (SMF) |
| Construction | 2-piece design with internal dampening springs | 1-piece solid billet steel |
| Torque Capacity | Limited; cannot support high performance tuning | Capable of holding 600–700+ Nm of torque |
| Durability | High failure rate; internal springs loosen/play over time | Indestructible solid structure with no moving parts |
| Thermal Capacity | Prone to heat-trapping and hot-spotting | Features radial cooling grooves for heat dissipation |
| Upgradeability | Cannot fit heavy-duty high-clamp pressure plates | Accommodates high-clamp SGI/nodular iron covers |
Chris: "Even on our project vehicle with only 18,000 km on the clock, you can already feel the rotational play in the factory two-piece DMF. With our target engine torque output set to 600–700 Nm, a factory dual-mass unit simply wouldn't stand up to the load."
Critical Installation Tip: Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC)
Hydraulic Bleeding Caution
Take extreme care when bleeding the new Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC) during reassembly.
-
Drip Bleed First: Allow fluid to gravity-drip bleed through the system first to displace main air pockets.
-
Slow Actuation: Bleed the pedal slowly and methodically. Rapid pumping can damage internal CSC seals.
-
Torque Specs: Ensure all flywheel and pressure plate fasteners are torqued strictly to specification using threadlocker.
Road Test & Driving Impressions
Chris: With the Blusteele Survivor Series kit installed, let's take the RG Colorado out on the road:
-
Pedal Feel: The pedal effort is slightly firmer than factory—an expected tradeoff for the significantly higher clamp pressure cover—but remains very manageable, smooth, and comfortable for daily driving.
-
Gear Engagement: Crisp, smooth take-up with effortless gear selection.
-
Driving Technique Adjustment: With a solid flywheel, gear selection matters. You cannot lug the engine around tight corners in high gears (e.g., 3rd gear at low speeds) like you might with a DMF; simply downshift to the correct gear before accelerating away.
Essential 1,000 km Bedding-In Procedure
Clutch Bedding Requirement
For the first 1,000 kilometers, drive the vehicle gently to ensure a long service life.
-
No Towing: Avoid hauling heavy trailers or loads during the break-in period.
-
No Heavy Off-Roading: Refrain from aggressive slipping, launching, or hard 4WD driving.
-
Smooth Engagement: Drive normally in stop-and-go traffic to allow the organic friction disc to evenly mate with the flywheel and pressure plate surfaces.
Summary
The BGM9149 conversion kit replaces the failure-prone dual-mass flywheel on the 2.8L Holden Colorado RG with a strong, high-clamping solid flywheel setup built for extreme 4WD performance and heavy towing.
