G'day, and welcome back! Chris from The Clutch Hub here. Today, we're taking a close look at a popular upgrade for late VS to VY Commodores powered by the 3.8L Ecotec engine paired with the Getrag manual gearbox.

From the factory, these vehicles rolled off the production line with a failure-prone dual-mass flywheel. To solve this, Blusteele offers a range of solid flywheel conversion solutions designed to drastically improve reliability and performance.

1. Blusteele Solutions for the Commodore Range

Depending on your driving style and power levels, Blusteele has several options available for this platform:

• BST 9277: A standard clutch replacement kit designed to match original equipment.

• BGM 9277: A heavy-duty upgrade kit (the exact kit we are focusing on today).

• Power to Torque Range (PT2, PT3, PT4): Performance-oriented options featuring ceramic sprung-center plates (PT3) or full-button ceramic plates (PT4) for modified or high-performance setups.

2. What's Inside the BGM 9277 Heavy-Duty Kit?

The Blusteele kit is exceptionally comprehensive, giving you everything required to complete a full dual-mass to solid-mass conversion in one box:

• New Solid Flywheel: Replaces the factory dual-mass unit entirely.

• High-Tensile Flywheel Bolts: Includes a new set of UNC high-tensile 1" x 5/16" bolts (always use Loctite 243 on these!).

• Heavy-Duty Pressure Plate: Built to deliver a significantly higher clamp load than factory.

• Multi-Layer Friction Plate: Features a quality organic EUK material with a sprung-center hub for great road drivability.

• Bearings & Seals: Includes a new thrust bearing and carrier assembly, a spigot bush, and a new rear main seal (vital to replace while you're in there).

• Installation Aids: Comes complete with a clutch alignment tool and new high-tensile pressure plate bolts.

3. Crucial Installation Tips

Flywheel Counterbalance & Alignment

The replacement solid flywheel features a counterbalance and must be installed in the correct position to properly balance the Ecotec engine:

• The flywheel features two alignment dowels. When lined up correctly, all the bolt holes will match up seamlessly.

• Watch out for automatic blocks: If you are fitting this to an engine block that previously had an automatic transmission, or if the dowels have been removed, the flywheel can technically bolt up in seven different positions. You must rotate it until you find the exact correct orientation to avoid severe engine vibrations.

Replacing Both Components

Because these Commodores are getting older, many have already had a solid flywheel conversion done previously. If you are just replacing the clutch down the track, you must match the new clutch brand to your existing solid flywheel, as different manufacturers use slightly different flywheel dimensions. Given the cost and labor involved, our strong recommendation is to replace the flywheel and clutch kit together at the same time rather than trying to machine an old flywheel.

4. Bedding-In Period

Once everything is bolted back together, proper break-in is essential to get maximum lifespan out of your new heavy-duty setup:

• Drive gently for the first 1,000 to 1,500 km.

• Avoid heavy towing, track days, or spirited driving during this initial window.

• Giving the organic friction material and new pressure plate time to bed evenly against the solid flywheel ensures smooth engagement and long-term durability.
