Good morning, guys. This is Chris from The Clutch Hub. Today, I thought we'd take a look at a Blusteele clutch kit for a Commodore. This particular clutch kit suits VT all the way through to VZ Commodore models equipped with the 5.7L LS1 engine. This includes the standard Commodore sedans, Utilities (Utes), Holden Crewman, and the corresponding HSV models of that era.

Important: The Flywheel Dilemma & Blusteele Solutions

Before looking at the parts, I want to clarify the range of options Blusteele offers so you don't get confused.

The factory LS1 engine comes with a very thin flywheel (almost like a automatic flexplate/drive plate). Because it is so thin from the factory, it cannot be machined or ground down—it is already at its minimum thickness.

Whenever you fit a new clutch, you should always have a freshly ground or new surface. For this reason, Blusteele strongly recommends replacing the flywheel when doing this clutch job.

Budget Options Warning: Blusteele does offer budget "clutch-only" kits without a flywheel (clutch plate, pressure plate, and thrust bearing only). However, these budget options do not carry a warranty. Furthermore, the Blusteele pressure plate will not bolt directly onto your original factory flywheel without removing the factory alignment dowels. If you choose the budget route, you must pull those dowels out.

Blusteele also offers heavy-duty and performance ranges (PT2, PT3, and PT4):

PT3 Performance: Features a cushioned ceramic button clutch plate with a sprung steel center.
PT4 Performance: Features a full ceramic button clutch disc with a sprung center.

Today, we are looking at their most popular option by far: the BGM984, which is Blusteele's Heavy Duty Organic Clutch Kit that includes a brand-new flywheel.

What’s Included in the BGM984 Kit?

Chromoly Billet Steel Flywheel: A very high-quality flywheel made from 4140/4145 billet Chromoly steel. It features Blusteele’s signature radial cooling grooves machined directly into the clutch mating surface.
New Flywheel Bolts: A fresh set of flywheel bolts is included in the box.

Critical LS1 Engine Note: The crankshaft flywheel bolt holes thread directly into the engine's oil galleries. If they are not properly sealed, oil will leak past the threads and onto your brand-new clutch disc, ruining it. You must use Loctite 243 on these threads to both securely lock the bolts and completely seal them from the oil galleries.
300mm Organic Clutch Disc: A premium-quality, full 300mm clutch disc using high-end LUK organic friction material and a heavy-duty twin-spring center hub.

Note: While some competitor brands only provide a smaller 280mm clutch disc for this application, Blusteele provides a full-size 300mm disc for maximum surface area.
Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC): A brand-new hydraulic slave cylinder is included.

Handling Warning: Treat this assembly with extreme care. Under no circumstances should you compress or operate the slave cylinder by hand before installation. Simply bolt it to the gearbox housing, install the transmission, and bleed it. Be sure to strictly follow the specific bleeding instructions provided in the box.
Clutch Alignment Tool: Included for easy, centered installation.
Roller Spigot Bearing: A brand-new replacement pilot/spigot bearing comes standard.
Pressure Plate Bolts & Durlock Washers: A new set of high-tensile pressure plate bolts paired with special Durlock washers. These are two-piece, self-locking wedge washers that prevent the pressure plate bolts from vibrating loose under heat and stress. It is crucial that these are installed together.
SGI Iron Heavy-Duty Pressure Plate: A very high-quality cover assembly made from SGI (Spheroidal Graphite) cast iron. This is a high-clamp unit delivering a massive 1,200 kg (approx. 2,650 lbs) of clamping pressure while maintaining a smooth pedal feel, perfectly matching the 300mm clutch disc.

Summary

That makes up the complete, comprehensive clutch and flywheel solution for the LS1 Commodore. It gives you every single component, bolt, and accessory required to do the job properly and permanently.
