Hey guys, Anthony here from LC Racing. I want to have a chat with you today about a clutch product by Blusteele.

This clutch is engineered specifically for the Mazda RX-8 (13B-MSP Renesis rotary engine). At LC Racing, we worked closely alongside Blusteele during the R&D process to ensure this kit delivers the absolute best performance possible. From our track-driven test car to our customers' street cars, the feedback and results have been outstanding. Let me show you what comes inside the box!

What’s Included in the Lightweight Flywheel Package

1. Billet Aluminium Lightweight Flywheel & Counterweight

  • Anodized Finish: Black hard-anodized billet aluminium flywheel body for superior corrosion resistance and a sleek look.

  • Ultralight Mass: Drastically reduces rotational mass compared to the heavy factory RX-8 dual-mass unit, yielding faster throttle response and quicker engine revs.

  • Radial Claw Grooving: Features Blusteele's signature claw-grooves across the steel friction face to continuously sweep away friction dust, prevent glazing, vent hot gases, and maintain a clean, consistent bite point under high thermal load.

  • Rotary Rear Counterweight: Includes a dedicated anodized rear counterweight specifically balanced for the 13B-MSP Renesis engine along with high-tensile counterweight-to-flywheel mounting hardware.

2. Fasteners & Locking Hardware

  • Serrated Locking Bolts: High-tensile pressure plate bolts featuring integrated serrated locking faces under the bolt heads that bite into the pressure plate housing to prevent backing out under high RPM.

    Fastener Installation Note

Even with serrated locking heads, always apply medium-strength threadlocker (such as Loctite 243) to all pressure plate and counterweight fasteners prior to torquing.

    Rotary Crankshaft Thrust Washer Warning

It is vital on Mazda rotary engines (13B / 20B) not to install an excessively heavy pressure plate diaphragm. Overly stiff clutch diaphragms exert extreme forward axial force against the eccentric shaft, which rapidly destroys the front engine crankshaft thrust bearings.

What’s Included in the Clutch Assembly Package

1. Friction Disc Options

  • Ceramic Cushion Button Disc (Featured): Sprung-center ceramic cushion button plate selected for this build. Delivers aggressive, positive torque engagement while utilizing a sprung hub to dampen severe shock loads—making it manageable for street use while handling intense track abuse.

  • Organic Disc Option: Also available with a premium organic friction disc for daily-driven RX-8s seeking a smoother, factory-like pedal takeup.

2. Heavy-Duty SGI Pressure Plate

  • Optimized Diaphragm Rate: Specially engineered clamp load designed specifically for rotary engines.

  • Blusteele balanced the clamp load to provide a firm, positive pedal feel without risking damage to internal rotary thrust washers or tiring out your leg in traffic.

3. Bearings & Alignment Hardware

  • All-Metal Release Bearing: Includes a heavy-duty release bearing featuring an all-metal cast body.

Technical Note: Many aftermarket RX-8 release bearings utilize plastic carrier sleeves, which become brittle over time due to rotary exhaust tunnel heat and shatter under load. This all-metal design completely eliminates that failure point.

  • Needle Roller Spigot Bearing: Includes a new pilot/spigot bearing for the eccentric shaft.

  • 13B Alignment Tool: Supplied for accurate disc alignment during assembly.

Key Installation Steps & Best Practices

  1. Counterweight & Flywheel Torque: Bolt the counterweight to the eccentric shaft and secure the lightweight flywheel to the counterweight. Torque all fasteners strictly to factory specifications and apply Loctite 243 to every thread.

  2. Spigot Bearing Lubrication: Install the new spigot bearing into the end of the eccentric shaft and lightly lubricate it with high-temperature bearing grease.

  3. Clutch & Pressure Plate Centering: Use the supplied 13B alignment tool to center the friction disc relative to the pilot bearing. Torque the serrated pressure plate bolts evenly in a cross pattern to factory spec.

  4. Release Fork & Pivot Points: Apply high-temp grease to the release bearing carrier slide, input shaft retainer sleeve, and clutch release fork pivot points before sliding the gearbox into place.
