Good day, it's Chris here from The Clutch Hub. Today we are performing a heavy-duty clutch replacement and Dual-Mass Flywheel (DMF) to Solid-Mass Flywheel (SMF) conversion on a Mitsubishi Triton (MQ / MR series, 2015-onward) fitted with the 2.4L 4N15 turbo-diesel engine.

Factory models ship with a dual-mass flywheel from new. Today we are converting to a heavy-duty Blusteele Survivor Series solid billet steel flywheel and self-adjusting clutch kit.

Part 1: Unboxing & Component Overview

1. Solid Billet Steel Flywheel (Box Part A)

  • Heavy Duty Billet Steel: Precision CNC-machined solid flywheel weighing 28 kg.

    Handling Hazard & Sharp Edges

    Oil Leak Risk: Thread Sealer Required

This flywheel weighs 28 kg and features sharp machined edges. Always wear heavy-duty mechanics gloves when lifting or positioning it to prevent hand injuries.

  • Claw-Groove Cooling: Features Blusteele’s signature radial claw grooves across the friction face to draw heat away, prevent hot-spotting, and clear dust under heavy load.

  • Complete Assembly: Includes a pre-fitted starter ring gear, dowels, and spigot location.

  • Replacement Fasteners: Comes with brand new flywheel-to-crankshaft bolts and pressure plate bolts.

    Note: Original factory DMF bolts cannot be reused because the mounting flange thickness on the solid flywheel is different.

2. Clutch Kit & Hydraulics (Box Part B)

  • Heavy-Duty Friction Disc: Premium LUK organic friction lining on a dual-stage, multi-spring sprung hub designed specifically to absorb drivetrain harmonics on solid flywheel conversions.

  • SGI Self-Adjusting Clutch Cover (SAC): Heavy-duty pressure plate featuring a factory-style self-adjusting mechanism (visible tracking springs fully backed off). Provides increased clamping force with near-factory pedal effort.

  • Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC): Replacement internal hydraulic release bearing unit.

  • Hardware & Alignment Tool: Alignment tool, replacement spigot bearing, and step-by-step CSC installation instructions.

Part 2: Step-by-Step Installation Guide

1. Flywheel Installation & Crankshaft Thread Sealing

  • Bolt Pattern Alignment: The 4N15 crankshaft bolt pattern is asymmetric. There are 7 possible orientations, but only 1 combination where all 7 bolt holes align perfectly. Rotate the flywheel until all holes line up prior to inserting bolts.

  • Crankshaft Thread Sealing (CRITICAL):

The flywheel bolt holes on the 4N15 crankshaft are open-through holes that extend directly into the engine's internal oil galleries.

Apply a generous amount of **Loctite 243 (or thread sealant)** to the supplied flywheel bolts before installation. Without thread sealant, engine oil will migrate along the bolt threads and contaminate the friction disc.

2. Spigot Bearing Fitment & Input Shaft Testing

  • Pre-Fit Dry Test: Before installing the spigot bearing or hanging the flywheel, test-fit the new spigot bearing onto the gearbox input shaft by hand.

  • Removing Shaft Buildup: If corrosion or fretting rust makes it tight, lightly polish the shaft snout with 400-grit emery cloth until the bearing slides on smoothly.

3. Factory Dual-Mass Flywheel Inspection

  • Even on low-kilometer vehicles (e.g., 20,000 km), factory dual-mass flywheels frequently show excessive rotational play and internal spring fatigue, making the solid billet conversion a major reliability upgrade for off-road and towing applications.

Part 3: Clutch & Hydraulic CSC Assembly

1. Mounting the Self-Adjusting Clutch (SAC) Cover

  • Clean all anti-corrosion grease from the flywheel and pressure plate friction faces using brake cleaner before installation.

  • Test-fit the clutch disc splines onto the transmission input shaft to verify smooth movement before mounting.

  • Cross-Pattern Torquing: Bolt down the pressure plate using the supplied fasteners, turning each bolt down slowly and evenly in a star pattern.

    Caution: Uneven torquing cocks the cover and trips the internal self-adjusting springs, ruining the pressure plate assembly.

2. Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC) Handling Rules

  • Do Not Compress By Hand: Never press, cycle, or bench-test the concentric slave cylinder prior to installation.

  • Installation Sequence:

    1. Remove CSC from packaging and slide it over the input shaft snout.

    2. Tighten the two retaining bolts.

    3. Leave the hydraulic quick-connect fitting off while mating the gearbox to the engine block to avoid hitting the vehicle firewall.

    4. Once the gearbox is fully bolted to the engine, feed the hydraulic pipe line through the bellhousing port and click it securely into the CSC.

3. Transmission Bellhousing Prep & Mating

  • Thoroughly degrease and wash out the inside of the transmission bellhousing to remove all old clutch dust.

  • Inspect mating surfaces and alignment dowels for burrs, dings, or damage that could cause engine-to-transmission misalignment.

4. High-Temperature Spline Lubrication

  • Apply only a light smear of high-temperature clutch grease to the input shaft splines (no more than the volume of a small fingernail). Wipe away any excess to avoid flung grease contaminating the clutch disc.

Part 4: Road Test & Bedding-In Procedure

Road Test Impressions

  • Pedal Feel: Light and smooth pedal operation despite the higher clamp load cover.

  • Engagement: Crisp gear selection; smooth take-up point roughly halfway up pedal travel.

  • NVH & Drivetrain Noise: Quiet operation with no noticeable gear rollover rattle or harsh feedback from the solid flywheel conversion.

1,000 km – 1,500 km Bedding-In Period

Bedding-In Instructions

Inform the vehicle owner that the new clutch disc and billet flywheel friction surface require a 1,000 km to 1,500 km break-in period.

  • Drive normally and smoothly.

  • Avoid heavy towing, aggressive off-road driving, or high-load launches during this initial distance to allow full, even bedding of the friction surfaces.

Summary

Converting the MQ/MR Mitsubishi Triton to a Blusteele Survivor Series Solid Billet Flywheel Kit eliminates weak dual-mass flywheel failure points while retaining factory-like pedal comfort and offering superior heat capacity for towing and off-road work.
